What is Working From Home Tax Allowance?

If your employer requires you to work at home, you can – and always have been able to – claim for increased costs due to working from home, eg, heating and electricity. But apportioning extra costs such as heating and electricity is tough. So instead you can, in simple terms, claim a rate of £6 a week. In previous tax years you are able to claim a rate of £4 a week.

Am I Eligible?

HMRC allows you to claim tax relief on costs occurred whilst working from home. To claim you must be:

• Only be claiming expenses for working from home.
• Not pay tax by self-assessment.
• Not have had your expenses paid by your employer.
• Have encountered higher costs since working from home.

HOW MUCH IS WORKING FROM TAX ALLOWANCE WORTH

The average 2020/2021 claim is £312 with previous years being £125.

CAN I GET A BACKDATED CHEQUE?

Yes, if you are eligible, you can backdate your Working From Home tax allowance claim by up to 4 years. It also doe does not require you to have been in continuous employment with one employer.
